Special Community Programs

Baum School of Art

Twice during a school year, a select group of students enjoy a nine-week session at the renowned Baum School of Art in Allentown. Students work with an instructor on various art projects throughout each session that involves the utilization of different artistic techniques.

Students are able to attend these sessions at the Baum School at no cost thanks to a generous donor who supports Mercy and the arts.

Summer Camp

Mercy’s Summer Camp is a four-week camp held three days per week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays) from 9am until 1pm. each July. The goal is for campers to participate in social activities both at Mercy and in the community. Camp activities include music, dancing, arts and crafts, swimming, bowling, movies and more. Cost is $150 for each weekly session or $425 for the four-week camp program.

For more information about our Summer Camp, please call 610.797.8242 or email school@mercyspeciallearning.org.

Parkettes

Mini Mustangs and School Age students enjoy the opportunity to visit Parkettes in Allentown on a monthly basis. Instructors with Parkettes, one of the nation’s pre-eminent gymnastics programs, monitor participants who walk on the balance beam, tumble on the floor, jump on the trampoline and more.

Rodale Aquatic Center

Our Mini Mustangs and School Age students go swimming once a month for an hour at Rodale Aquatic Center in Allentown. This fun activity is packed with learning goals such as dressing skills, socializing, game-playing, communicating and, of course, swimming. The pool is accessible with a Hoyer Lift so that every child can enjoy time in the water. Volunteers also join us in encouraging everyone to learn to enjoy the water safely.

Field Trips

Individual classrooms plan field trips throughout the year to help the students enjoy new and meaningful activities throughout the Lehigh Valley. Our trips are as diverse as our students.

  • Shows at DeSales University, Bethlehem Catholic High School and Allentown Central Catholic High School

  • Bowling at Mountainville Lanes

  • Learning about horses at Equi-librium

  • Riding trains at Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway

  • Halloween adventure at the Best Western in Bethlehem

  • Track & Field Day at Notre Dame High School in Easton. Organized but the Notre Dame Key Club, this is a fall day of field events that begins with a torch lighting and ends with an awards presentation.

  • Lehigh County’s Special Olympics each May. Mercy students age 8 and older compete in the all-day event that consists of track and field events as well as an Olympic Village with activities such as face painting, carnival games and giveaways. Each child is a winner at Special Olympics and brings home a ribbon for every event in which he or she participates.

  • The Patrick & Rosemary McFadden J.O.Y. Fund also enables the entire student body to go on a major field trip at the end of each school year. The McFadden family created this special fund to honor Rosemary for her many years of volunteering in our school.
